Fix for Inspiron N5050 booting to a black screen after Windows 10 upgrade

Dave WalterAdvice3 Comments

If you have a Dell Inspiron N5050 notebook, you may find that it doesn’t work properly after upgrading to Windows 10.

When the laptop turns on, you may notice the screen turn black after a while. It seems like nothing you press will bring the display back.

The key to fixing this problem is to plug in an external monitor. Most desktop computer monitors will do. Plug the monitor into the 15-pin VGA connector on the side of the laptop. You should now be able to use your computer through the attached screen.

To get the notebook’s own display working, you will need an Internet connection. Visit the dell.com website, and go to Support. Type in your Dell Service Tag (printed on the base of the computer) and then look for drivers. You should be able to find a BIOS update, the latest of which is A05. Download and run the BIOS update program. Make sure your computer is plugged into mains power and do not turn off your computer while the update runs.

After the update finishes, your computer will restart. You should now be able to unplug the monitor, as the laptop display will now be working.
