How to lock your iPhone or iPad screen to a specific app

If you have young kids, you no doubt know that an iPhone or iPad screen is an easy way to keep them occupied. But can you trust them to handle your gadget without accidentally emailing your boss or phoning all of your contacts?

Fortunately, you can lock your screen to a single app. This lets your child use their favourite game or learning app, but won’t allow them to exit that app.

To set this feature up for the first time, go into the Settings app, then tap on General, then Accessibility, then Guided Access. Now press Turn Guided Access on. You will be asked to set a passcode (it doesn’t have to be the same as your main passcode). Then you can come out of the Settings app.

When you want to turn on the screen lock, follow these steps:

  1. Go into the app you’d like your child to use.
  2. Triple-click the home button. That’s the main button on the front of your iPhone or iPad.
  3. You will see the message “Guided Access Started”. Your phone is now locked to that app.

And to unlock the screen:

  1. Triple-click the home button.
  2. Enter your passcode for Guided Access.
  3. Press End.
